A Q&A with Alice: The Heart Behind Ed’s Tree Service

To understand more about Ed’s Tree Service and our approach to tree care, we spoke with Alice, the owner of the company, about the importance of tree fertilization and what makes our services unique.

Q: What do you do for tree fertilization, and why is it important?

Trees need to be fertilized to give them extra nutrients that could be in decline. Sometimes people just want to keep their trees healthy, so we feed trees usually in the spring, summer, and fall. The type of method we use is an injection method where we have capsules full of liquid fertilizer that we inject right into the tree trunk itself. We normally don’t do deep root feeding because majority of the time if you’re trying to drill holes in the ground with an auger three feet deep, majority of the time, you can’t get to the root system of trees because the roots go into driveways, roadways or other people’s yards. So the injection type of feeding is much more effective.

Q: What is the tree fertilization process from start to finish?

We have capsules that are full of liquid nutrients. We drill a little tiny hole to insert these capsules. We go around the base of the tree and we drill just under the bark itself into the first sap ring, which is the ring that carries all the water and nutrients. These capsules are plugged into the hole. The sap flow absorbs the liquid nutrients, and it is delivered through the tree systemically. The sap flow goes up to the crown and helps with crown development and down to the roots to help with root development.

Q: How do i know if my tree needs to be fertilized?

If you see your tree in decline, or if the leaves are not growing to their full potential, or if your tree has an excessive amount of dead wood, these would be reasons to feed your tree. Some people like to just feed their trees to keep them healthy – you might want to feed your trees about every two or three years.

Q: What are common signs that a tree is lacking nutrients?

Usually if the leaves are not fully developed or if the leaves have an odd color to them. These would be visual reasons or if you start to see the tree with a lot of dead tops. This could be a nutrition seed problem where it’s not getting the nutrients to fully develop the crown.

Q: What types of fertilizers do you use, and are they safe for the environment?

For these liquid nutrients and they’re just the basic nutrients you would find in fertilizer for your lawn.

Q: How often should trees be fertilized?

About every two or three years, but you don’t have to fertilize your trees. It’s usually if your tree is in decline – some people just like to give it a boost of nutrients, which is fine.

Q: Does fertilization work on all types of trees, or are some species more responsive?

No, it generally works for any tree.

Q: Can proper fertilization help protect trees from pests and diseases?

No, fertilization does not protect you from pests and diseases, you would have to go into a completely different field to help with any type of insect or pest control.

The Mauget Tree Injection Fertilization Process

At Ed’s Tree Service, we recommend the Mauget Tree Injection Process to ensure your trees get the micronutrients they need. This advanced method involves injecting liquid fertilizer directly into the sapwood of your tree at its base. We use a Stemix micro-injector to deliver a mineral formula designed to stimulate growth in the foliage, trunk, and root system.

The process is minimally invasive and highly effective. We drill small holes—only 3/16 of an inch in diameter and no deeper than ¾ of an inch—every 6 inches around the base of the tree. We then insert fertilizer capsules into these holes. The tiny puncture wounds heal quickly, and the nutrients are efficiently absorbed into the tree’s sap stream, circulating throughout the entire tree. To help the process, we recommend watering the tree after the injection.

This tree fertilization service in MD is an excellent option for revitalizing your trees and ensuring they stay healthy and strong, even in urban environments where they face environmental stresses.
