Hear from our owner, Alice, about how professional stump removal works:
Q: What are the main methods for stump removal, and which do you use?
So we have machines that grind stumps out. It’s a large rotating blade with teeth on it that chip away at the stump. We have three different machines. One is a very large machine trailer behind a truck, and that can only access dumps in the front yard unless we have access to other parts of the property with the machine and a trailer behind a truck. Otherwise, we have two portable machines that are self-propelled in order to get to the stump and grind the stumps out usually in the backyard. And we have different sizes of stump machines depending on the area or what size stump we’re grinding.
Q: Why is stump removal important after a tree removal?
Some people would like to have a stump removed so that they can put down grass, [or] not have a unsightly stump in the middle of their lawn. Sometimes stumps are removed because they’re in landscape beds, but not everybody grinds their stumps out. It’s really just a preference from the homeowner.
Q: What is the difference between stump removal and stump grinding?
The only way to get rid of a stump is to use machine and grind it out. We don’t dig a stump up and haul the whole entire stump and root ball like big construction companies do. They have different types of machines, big bulldozers that will uproot a stump when they’re clearing land, but we don’t do that in homeowner’s yards. We use the machines to grind it out.
Q: What is the stump grinding process step-by-step?
Once we maneuver the machine to the stump, the blade is turned on. It has teeth that extend from the edges of the blade. So the teeth is what chips the stump up, moving the blade back and forth and go deeper and deeper until the whole stump. It is dissolved to wood chips. Stumps themselves are usually only a foot deep, so you don’t have to grind very deep before you hit actual dirt. But you do have to grind as wide as the stump is and the root flare, and each stump is different, depending on the size.
Q: How do leftover stumps or roots impact landscaping or new planting?
If you leave a stump, you may not be able to dig around that stump because it has roots that extend from the edge of the stump. Most people will grind the stumps out if they wanna plant in the area or redo their lawn. If you leave a stump in your lawn, it usually takes 20 years or more to rot. So, a lot of people will grind a stump out and then put down new sod or seed.
Q: How long does stump removal usually take?
Stump removal is pretty efficient. It could take 10 minutes up to an hour for regular stumps. If it’s a very large stump, it could take several hours. And sometimes the larger the stump, the more mulch is created. We have to haul that mulch away as we’re grinding the stump. Otherwise, you could end up with a pile of mulch five feet wide and two feet high.
Q: Are there certain types of stumps that are harder to remove?
The only stumps that are difficult to remove is the accessibility. We have to have access to get the machine to the stump. Once we get there, we can grind as much as possible if it’s too close to a fence. We have to stay at least six inches from the edge of the fence, edge of a foundation, edge of a patio because the blade extends beyond the stump in order to grind it. So those are the only issues if the stump is too close to some type of structure or foundation.
Q: Can you remove stumps in difficult-to-reach areas of a property?
As long as the machine can get to the area, yes, we can absolutely still grind this up.
